How to style your shelves

One of my favourite things to do is to style shelves! It may sound odd but I believe that anything thats out on show needs to look good so here are my top tips on how to create calm shelves from chaos

Top tips from interior designer Holly Scott on styling the shelves in your home so that they look calm and styled and not chaotic and cluttered.

Colour coded books

1. ORGANISING BOOKS

I love to group books in colours as it looks appealing and less cluttered. Also I suggest bringing the books to the front of the shelf so they all look the same level rather than pushed to the back where they will all be different depths.

2. GROUPING

You can add candles, boxes or artefacts on stacks of books but also in groups. When creating a group you can do so by colour, style or items of a similar use, for example candles. It’s best to group in odd numbers.

3. SPACE

Make sure you keep space between groups of artefacts, books or photo frames. This way it won’t look too cluttered.

The end result should not be symmetrical, but that’s ok! The unsystematic nature is what makes the shelves appear interesting and eye catching.
