How to Create a Cosy Home this Autumn

Autumn has arrived, and it’s time to transform your home into a warm, inviting retreat. With a few simple updates, you can make your space feel like a cosy haven to enjoy those crisp evenings indoors. Here are my top tips to create that snug, autumnal vibe for your home this season.

1. Layer Up with Textures

One of the easiest ways to cosy up any room is by layering textures. Think soft throws, chunky knit blankets, and cosy cushions in warm materials like wool, velvet, and faux fur. These not only add comfort but create visual warmth. Drape them over your sofa or chairs for an effortlessly snug look.

Tip: Opt for earthy colours like deep rust, ochre, or forest green to reflect the natural beauty of autumn.

My favourite go to shop for cushions and throws is Andrew Martin.

2. Add Warmth with Lighting

Lighting can completely change the feel of a room, especially as the evenings grow darker. Switch out harsh lighting for warmer, softer tones. Table lamps with warm-toned bulbs, fairy lights, or even candles are perfect for creating that ambient glow. Layer your lighting to create different moods around the room, whether it's for reading in your favourite nook or hosting friends for a cosy evening.

Tip: Candles with autumn scents like cinnamon or spiced apple add both light and fragrance, making your space feel even cosier.

3. Bring the Outdoors In

Autumn is all about nature, so bring those elements into your home. Decorate with dried flowers, pampas grass, or even seasonal foliage from your garden. Pine cones and branches in rustic vases or wreaths made from autumnal leaves look beautiful and add a natural texture to your décor.

Tip: A large bowl of fresh apples or pumpkins can be both decorative and practical, adding an instant autumnal feel.

4. Cosy Corners for Relaxing

Create small, intimate spaces where you can unwind and get cosy. Think about adding a reading nook with a comfy armchair, a thick blanket, and a soft rug. Pile on some cushions and add a side table for your hot chocolate or favourite book. These little corners will make you feel like you’re wrapped in a warm hug every time you sit down.

Tip: If you’ve got a window seat, it’s the perfect spot to turn into a cosy escape for enjoying a cuppa while watching the world outside.

5. Scented Comfort

Our sense of smell plays a huge role in how cosy and relaxed we feel. Choose scents that reflect the season—think spiced orange, vanilla, or sandalwood. Scented candles, diffusers, or wax melts can all fill your home with warmth, while also adding an extra layer of atmosphere. The comforting scent of a crackling fire can instantly transport you to those magical autumn nights.

6. Warm and Earthy Tones

Autumn is the season to embrace warmer, earthy hues. Consider introducing shades like burnt orange, mustard yellow, and deep red into your décor through cushions, throws, or even a feature wall. These tones not only reflect the season but also create a soothing, welcoming atmosphere that feels grounded and calming.

Tip: If painting a wall feels too much, try swapping out your accessories for seasonal colours—scatter cushions, rugs, or wall art can make all the difference.

7. Focus on Comfort in the Living Room

The living room is where we often spend most of our time, so make it as comfortable as possible. Invest in quality cushions and throws to make your sofa a cosy spot. Consider moving your furniture slightly closer together to create a more intimate space, especially if you have a fireplace to gather around.

8. Multi-functional Cosy Spaces

As we move into autumn, our homes become the hub for hosting. Think about how you can make your space flexible for both lounging and socialising. A modular sofa or ottoman that can double as extra seating or storage is ideal for both relaxing solo and welcoming guests.

By making just a few seasonal tweaks, you can transform your home into a cosy, welcoming space to enjoy all that autumn has to offer. Whether it's curling up with a book or hosting friends, creating warmth and comfort will help you embrace the best of the season.
