Top Lighting Tips For Your Home

Illuminating Your Home with Top Lighting Tips

Lighting can have a huge impact on the overall feel of any space as it has the power to create the perfect ambiance. Lighting not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also plays a crucial role in setting the mood and functionality of a room. In this blog, I’ll explore some top lighting tips to help you illuminate your home with both style and functionality.

LAYERED LIGHTING

One of the common things I see lacking in a lot of the homes I visit is that they don’t have enough lighting. A beautifully lit room requires layers of light. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create depth and interest. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination, task lighting serves specific functions, and accent lighting adds drama and highlights focal points. Lighting is a key element of interior design and I cover a whole lesson on it in Happy Home Design, my online course.

NATURAL LIGHT MAXIMISATION

Embrace natural light whenever possible. Position furniture to make the most of available daylight, and consider light-filtering window treatments to maintain privacy while allowing sunlight to fill the room. Natural light not only enhances the look and style of a space but also positively influences mood and well-being. A great magic trick I love, is to use mirrors to reflect more natural light into a room.

DIMMER SWITCHES

Install dimmer switches to control the intensity of your lighting. This simple addition allows you to adjust the mood according to different activities and times of the day. Dimmers are especially effective in bedrooms and dining areas, where versatility in lighting is key.

Floor lamp Led lightbulbs

LED TECHNOLOGY

Make the switch to LED lighting for energy efficiency and versatility. LEDs are not only long-lasting but also come in a variety of colour temperatures, allowing you to customise the ambiance of each room. They are perfect for both ambient and accent lighting, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective home. We use Philips Hue light bulbs around our home and garden which I love because they can be automated and set to come on and off at certain times of the day, for example our landing lights dim to a night light around our girls bedtime.

STATEMENT LIGHT FIXTURES

Think of lighting fixtures as functional works of art. Invest in statement chandeliers, pendants, or wall sconces that not only provide illumination but also serve as focal points in your design. Choose fixtures that complement the overall style of the room and add a touch of personality. I talk in this magazine article for Woman and Home Magazine about Statement Lighting.

Task Lighting home office

TASK LIGHTING IN WORK AREAS

Ensure you have enough task lighting in areas where specific activities take place, such as the kitchen, home office, or reading nooks. Pendant lights over kitchen islands, desk lamps, or adjustable wall-mounted fixtures can provide focused illumination, enhancing functionality.

ACCENTUATE ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

This is a great tip for period properties. Use lighting to highlight the architectural features of your home. Whether it's a beautiful fireplace, textured walls, or unique molding, strategically placed accent lighting draws attention to these elements, adding character and depth to your interior.

COLOUR TEMPERATURE CONSIDERATION

Pay attention to the colour temperature of your lighting. Warmer tones (around 2700K) are cosy and inviting, ideal for living areas, while cooler tones (3500K and above) work well in task-oriented spaces like kitchens and bathrooms., but don’t go too cool or your space will feel cold and sterile. Experiment with different temperatures to find the perfect balance.
