5 Ways to make your room feel bigger

5 Ways to make your room feel bigger

I wanted to pop to you and share my insider tips on how to make a room feel bigger because this is a question that I often get asked and thought you might find it useful. These tips are useful for every interior so I hope you find them useful!

1. LIGHT COLOUR PALETTE

Using paler tones of colour on your walls, ceiling and floor will make your room feel light and airy. Also consider painting the skirtings and ceiling the same colour to create a seamless feel which will make the room feel more spacious. Or if you are using a mid tone you might want to paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the wall colour to make the ceiling feel higher.

2. MIRRORS

This is one of my favourite tricks which I try to incorporate in all of my designs. There are so many gorgeous mirrors out there and they are a great way to add texture and colour to your room but they will also reflect the light which will give the illusion of more space.

3. PROPORTION

Make sure your furniture is in proportion for the room to avoid overcrowding. It will feel more spacious to have a couple of larger items of furniture rather than it feeling cluttered. You can also create a sense of space by leaving a little air in between the sides of your furniture and the walls, don’t be tempted to push everything against the walls. You could also have multifunctional items such as a sofa bed if you are short of space and the room needs to be used for different activities. I have a gorgeous green velvet sofa bed in my home office which is pulled out and set up as a bed when we have friends to stay.

4. WINDOWS

Use window treatments that allow natural light to flow into the room and hang curtains and blinds nice and high above the windows to create the illusion of taller ceilings.

5. LIGHTING

Make sure you have layers of lighting to brighten up dark corners and make the room feel more spacious. Again think about proportion, you don't want tiny lamps everywhere, make sure you have a variation in scale and height.
